The dangers of remote aligner treatment
In December 2023, Smile Direct Club shut down after filing for bankruptcy in the US which left millions of customers without ongoing aligner treatment.
Smile Direct Club offered clear aligners to customers without the need for an in-person appointment with a dentist. The treatment was attractive to customers owing to its lower price point compared traditional aligner treatment which involves regular face to face appointments with a dental practitioner. Customers also made their own moulds for their aligners at home. The treatment should take between four to six months and there were online check ins with registered dentists available.
Since the closure at the end of last year, customers have been left without support or information as the customer support line will no longer be available. Customers are being encouraged to reach out to their local dentists if they want to carry on with their treatment. Despite the fact customers are not receiving new aligners or remote consultations anymore, payment plans are expected to still go ahead until next steps are determined by the company.
Smile Direct Club, and other online aligner providers, have faced criticisms from dental professionals for some time, as they have highlighted the harm that can be caused by aligners if not fitted by a dentist in person. Many customers have been left with poor results and crooked teeth despite spending time and money on the online aligner treatment. Some of the issues faced by some customers are:
- Wobbly teeth
- Decay
- Gum recession
- Permanent nerve damage
- Tooth loss
The aligners put force on the teeth which might be underestimated by customers. It is important to undergo aligner or any other orthodontic treatment with a registered, qualified dental practitioner who offers in person appointments as they will be able to spot any issues such as gum disease or decay which would likely get missed if the appointments were done remotely.
It is very important that if you are seeking orthodontic treatment to align your teeth that you attend with a dentist or orthodontist in person. They will be able to examine and assess your teeth and discuss the best treatment options for you. They will also be able to take accurate measurements and confirm if you are a suitable candidate for treatment. Aligner treatment is not the best suited treatment for all patients so its important to discuss your options with a professional to ensure you get the best result.
